Thursday’s ethical style

Happy Thursday after Valentine’s Day! How did you celebrate (if at all)?ย I had drinks with a good friend, which was fun.

I know I said I would have an outfit post today, but the weather did not cooperate this weekend (read torrential rain) so I have the next best thing, a new ethical style post.

The star of this outfit is definitely the red coat. I am always drawn to statement coats but I think I am scared of them as well. They seem to make such a loud, well, statement ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m sure one day, I will just go for it. I think that’s the attitude you have to take when rocking a statement anything ๐Ÿ™‚ I like the way the cobalt blue bag and the bone colored jeans and top keep this outfit graphic and clean, and you can almost never go wrong with gold hoops and kitten heels.

I recently read something about ethical fashion recently that got me thinking. It stated that it’s not enough to just switch to consuming ethically produced goods at the rate that we consume fast fashion. Instead we should also try to consume less in general and purchase second-hand whenever possible. I am in the process of thinking about a spring/summer capsule wardrobe and I have been inspired by this idea to try to source at least half (hopefully more) of my new items from thrift and consignment stores. It will definitely be an interesting challenge. This makes sense as well as I am in the process of losing weight and don’t want to make serious clothing investments right now or cycle through a lot of cheap items.

How about you? What is are your spring/summer fashion goals?

Thursday’s Ethical Style

This week’s ethical style has an athleisure feel to it. I started with a cute sweatshirt with sequin detailing and added gold-striped leggings and shiny sneakers. Simple crystal studs and a gold ponytail holder complete the look.

I think the athleisure trend has a lot of cool elements, but I have yet to embrace it in my own wardrobe. I think I don’t feel athletic enough to wear it ๐Ÿ™‚ But since I’m considering training for the Brooklyn Half Marathon I might be able to convince myself to embrace my inner sneaker queen. I have done this race twice and really enjoyed the training process even though it was brutal most of the time. And the self satisfaction I felt crossing the finish line was worth all the pain. I definitely feel like I need some sort of event to train for in order to reignite my exercise program which has been really lame for the past few months. Wish me luck!

How about you? How do you feel about the athleisure trend? How do you motivate yourself to stay active?

Thursday’s Ethical Style

I don’t know about you, but I always struggle with finding outerwear that keeps you warm, looks stylish and works with multiple outfits. I think this herringbone coat from Amour Vert checks all those boxes. It’s so awesomely chic, I might add it to my fall capsule (sort of) wardrobe.ย I paired it with dark skinny jeans, a silk sleeveless button down, some fantastic low-heeled pumps and a tiny pearl necklace for a classy, sophisticated look that is appropriate for work and/or walking the city streets looking fabulous.

On the subject of capsule wardrobes, I did a big purge this past weekend. I donated a fair amount of stuff and stored the rest. It was immensely satisfying and I feel so happy to be able to see most of my fall wardrobe on one clothing rack. My drawers are no longer overloaded and hard to close. I even organized my hangers ๐Ÿ™‚ It just feels lighter. Without all the sartorial noise, I feel closer to defining my personal style and it is easier to see the types of items I may need to purchase to fill in gaps. I may add a few more pieces (like that jacket!), but I feel like I’ve got most of my bases covered. I will be sharing more about what I chose to keep in a later post, so stay tuned!

How about you? Do you struggle to find the right outerwear pieces for cooler months? Would you ever do a capsule wardrobe?

An outfit for the fall transition

Summer is almost over! I can’t believe it went so fast and yet at the same time seemed to last forever. Dressing for the changing seasons can be tricky. This year, I am mad about sweatshirts for some reason. I think it is because so many chic options are now available. This black, mock neck version from Everlane seems like it would be great for layering as the weather cools down. Items like this are also very versatile, which is helpful when you are thinking about scaling down your wardrobe. So many uses… for example, you could layer it over a patterned maxi dress, like this one from H&M’s Conscious line. Paired with simple but impactful gold jewelry and black boots it makes the perfect in-between outfit. How about you? What are your tricks for transitional dressing?

Thursday’s ethical style

I am obsessed with the combination of this dress with these shoes. The color reminds me of some beautiful stucco houses I have seen on my journeys. I’ve finished the outfit with simple jewelry and a subtley patterned clutch. I don’t pay much attention to hair jewelry but I think I might start trying a little harder after seeing this hair pin. How about you? Do you like the idea of matching your shoes with your dress? Do you have a strong hair accessories game?

Thursday’s ethical style

I don’t know about you but I love striped shirts! I am always drawn to them and own several versions. This relaxed one from H&M’s Conscious line seems both comfortable and stylish. I paired it with a pair of distressed jeans also from H&M Conscious for a casual look that is still polished. I could see wearing this outfit to a weekend get together. It might even be okay as a work outfit for some of you depending on your office dress code. The ring and the necklace are from Favor Jewelry, an ethical jewelry company from Portland with a great selection of handmade, minimal pieces. I have my eyes on many of their items! Finally, I like the graphic imagery of this wallet, which is made from a recycled cement bag.

Here are the details for today’s look:

  2. Ring, Favor Jewelry
  3. Necklace, Favor Jewelry
  4. Jeans, H&M Conscious
  5. Shoes, Tom’s

Thursday’s ethical style

Today’s outfit pairs a cute pink tank top (which I actually bought recently) with a kicky skirt and sneakers. Tie a bandana around your neck to complete the look. I like how cheeky this outfit is. It’s sexy, yet playful. As always, the items for Thursday’s ethical style are sourced from retailers that report themselves to be ethical and/or sustainable. I have found that this can mean a lot of different things for each retailer, from engaging in fair labor practices to sourcing recycled materials to eco-friendly production practices. While this can all be a little confusing, I feel like it is a step in the right direction to start to consider these factors when it comes to the clothing we wear. Here are the links to today’s picks:

Sneakers, Tom’s

Skirt, ASOS Eco Edit

Tank top, ASOS Eco Edit

Bandana, Krochet Kids

Ikat Wallet, Fair Trade Winds

Necklace, Starfish Project

How about you? What do you think of today’s look? Are you trying to be more conscious of your fashion choices? What have your experiences been?

If you follow my blog, you know that I am in Phoenix for the month of July. It’s been hard to get a photo shoot in since my go-to photographer (my awesome sister) is 3000 miles away. But I think I have convinced my Dad to take some shots, so hopefully that will be coming soon. It has also been a challenge to come up with ethically-sourced outfits. I had some outfits planned before I left New York, but the clothes that I ordered didn’t look right. This week, I broke down and went to Target. It felt like an old friend and I got some pieces I really love, but ended up feeling bad about it and not wanting to post those clothes on the blog. Lesson learned, I guess.

I am finding that being more thoughtful about my purchases takes more time and results in a less spontaneous shopping experience, which is something that I am having a little trouble getting used to. Most of the ethical clothing I buy is from online retailers, so I also miss the brick-and-mortar shopping experience. Still I think there is value in being more methodical about the clothing that I purchase both from a budget aspect and an emotional aspect. I think, deep down, I desire a connection to each item of clothing I wear. So when I get back to New York, I plan to purge and reassess my current wardrobe, which I actually very excited about. I think I will use some simplified version of the Marie Kondo method, but also put thought into the use of each piece and reintroduce myself to the clothes I own. I will be sure to blog about the process. It’s nice to know I will be coming home to a specific project as well.
